By most measures, Apple makes some great products. Their customers are amazing fans. The Apple tribe tells everyone about the greatness of their products. As an owner of an iPhone, I get it. Apple has made “WOW” products, and is reaping the benefits from truly great innovation.
Like most energized tribes, however, there is a sub-tribe of irritating snobs; almost elitist. These folks get on a band wagon, which they of course did not start, and they tell everyone how great their new product is, but then they just can’t help themselves….They have to criticize and/or belittle those who don’t have their Apple product.
This is short sighted on several levels, and I don’t need to spell out why. In fact, if you don’t get why that is short sighted, you can pretty much count yourself in the elitist Apple-snob sub-tribe.
There are valid reasons for not having an Apple product. Sometimes it is budgeted related; especially in these hard times. What someone has works pretty well and gets 99% of the job done just fine. Other times it’s preference. I know some business people that have found an iPhone is not the best solution for them.
Apple makes some great products; no question. Are you as classy as the products?

Insiders and outsiders. To have insiders you have to have outsiders, and no one likes being an outsider.
I'm guessing I might be one of the "Apple Snobs" you're referring to.
If I've been overzealous in expressing my love for all things Apple, I'd like to offer a public apology.
So, here goes:
I'm really sorry for all of you who still have PCs. I'm sorry about the time you have to wait for your machine to boot up. I'm sorry about the lack of customer service you receive from your equipment supplier. I'm sorry about that pesky blue screen you keep seeing. And most of all I'm sorry that you find yourself dependent on Microsoft to get things done.
Please accept my apology.
Jon Dale
P.s. Tod, I hope you've got a sense of humor. If you don't find this funny please feel free to delete my comment.
That has always been the case with Apple. From the very beginning they had the likes of Douglas Adams and Stephen Fry promoting them extremely zealously.
I was hoping that with the recent explosion of Apple product sales, the snobs would become less obvious but there now just seems to be more of them. :-(
I agree with you. I used to shake my head at the overzealousness of the Apple people. No way they could be that good. I loved my PC. Then one day I was waiting for yet one more virus update and one more Microsoft Windows update and couldn't get to writing for half an hour. I said, "I'm getting a Mac." And I did. Now I know what all the hoopla is about and I have to admit I've turned into one of those Apple junkies. I'll try not to be obnoxious! :-)
But oh how I love opening it up and it's instantly ON. How I love not worrying about viruses or constant updates. And the touch of the keyboard. Sigh. People in love tend to tell everyone. So I'm sorry if we seem snobbish. We really aren't. We just want to share the love!
Hey Jon
You are a real man of genius for your comment.
But…my NEW iPhone 3Gs just shut down on my all of the sudden. Hmm…is it because I still have a PC?
Just want to identify the problem first before I call the CDC to figure it out.
Tod, Tod, Tod. (Shaking head sadly). It’s amazing your PC was functional long enough to compose this silly little post of yours.
Gabe, he probably wrote this from his iPhone.
Jon & Gabe - Thank you for so eloquently reinforcing my point. :-)
I just bought a MacBook last Sunday. First one I have owned. I have always wanted one.
It brought me back to the day as a child and the ice cream truck would drive by and all the neighbor kids would get some cause their parents could afford it, but I had to stand there and pout and play in the dirt while they taunted me.
Well, Now I have some Ice Cream and it is Soooo Goooood!! So picture me sticking my tongue out at you who have stuck your tongue out at me!! Ppsstthhhh

I have nothing against the makers of PC's but I have everything against Windows as an operating system. It's the most pathetic excuse for an OS I've ever seen. When I switched to a Mac about 9 years ago I felt like I woke up from a bad dream.
Windows sucks and sucks bad. Microsoft just keeps piling crap after crap into Windows rather than making people upgrade like Apple does. The result is Windows is an overly bloated OS that kills your system. Google it.
Snobs and elitists have their place. In some countries they are the rich living in exclusive neighborhoods. In others they are dictators. They drive early innovation, but real change focuses on the bottom of the pyramid. What MP3 player is most popular in China, India, Africa, Detroit, New Orleans, Donelson...?

If budget is a concern with Macs, try Linux. It's free. You can dual-boot with Windows for programs that will only run on Windows. Linux will perform all the same functions, such as surfing, IM, word processing and you don't have to pay a dime for it (all though it'd be smart to get a few books to learn the system). Linux is based on the same UNIX architecture as Mac OS X, so it's equally as stable. This is the set-up I had in college. Used Windows only when absolutely necessary and Linux for the rest.
My friend Tod,
I had always considered myself "platform agnostic" since I owned both a PC desktop and a Mac laptop. However, after years of fighting viruses (the latest one embedded itself in the operating system kernel) and tired of the blue screen of death, I've decided to walk away from my PC altogether.
Much like the rest of the business world, you, my friend, one day will come to your senses, buy an Apple computer and stop the name calling nonsense.
So, before you call me a metrosexual, fashionista, blah, blah, blah, I'm offering my help because I care, and I realize your angry post is the attempt of a desperate man asking for help.
Maurilio - I appreciate your insights, but as a metrosexual it's all about the look. That's the only real reason you like the Apple. It's "prettier". Some might say that Boy George is prettier than Steven Tyler, but I still prefer Aerosmith. :-)
There's an old saying among Mac zealots -
Never ask a man what type of computer he has.
If he uses a PC. you'll embarrass him. If he uses a Mac, he'll talk your leg off.
I came over from the Dark Side in 2004 and we are now a 4 Mac, 3-iPod and two Airport Extreme family.
No iPhone though, because Verizon is a better network than ATT where we live.
Tod, I balk at your using Aerosmith as a metaphor for Microsoft!
And Jim, Verizon is a better network than ATT everywhere o.O
